Construction of New Obstetrics Unit

construction-of-new-obstetrics-unitPella Regional Health Center has started a construction project to relocate and expand the Obstetrics Unit. The new unit will be located on a third floor addition above our Medical/Surgical and Intensive Care area. Project completion is scheduled for Fall 2017. This is a project that everyone in the hospital is really excited about as so many of us have seen firsthand how much this service has grown in the last few years.

In fact, for the past several years, we’ve experienced steady growth in the Obstetrics area. Since 2010 the number of births has increased by more than 40%. Part of the growth is due to closures of regional obstetrics programs. Another reason for the growth is that patients are driving many miles to experience birth at Pella Regional. In 2015 mothers from 64 different communities came to Pella Regional to deliver their babies.

Plans include:

  • More rooms for labor/delivery and postpartum — 7 labor rooms, 3 postpartum rooms and 2 triage rooms.
  • Additional space in the nursery.
  • Expanded nursing station and waiting areas

Our new department will be large enough to meet the community demand well into the future. The expansion also includes meeting the demand for access to care with recruitment of additional nurses and physicians who care and believe in our mission.  We will be adding two new physicians within the next year, bringing our number of family practice physicians who also provide obstetrics to 11, the largest group in the Southeast Iowa region.

Here are some recent photos of the construction:
